THE TWO-PERCENT SOLUTION

In talking to some of our clients and friends, many of them seem to be stuck with the misconception that they do not have a way to change the situation that they currently find themselves in. Some people are still of the opinion that the 2%er is in control of the day. Any company that we contract with to involve the staff and management in the Cooperative Action Model have agreed to make it safe for any staff or management to challenge 2% activity. With this in mind, I thought it would be useful to share with you an article of mine that appeared in the St. Catharines Standard on April 11, 1999.

The article is self explanatory, but remember, you do not have to allow the 2% to control your personal life, your work life or your spiritual life. Think of the 98% and deal with the 2%.

“There is a small group of people that have been put on this planet to make the rest of us crazy. These are the ones who butt in line, or won’t let you out of a parking lot onto a busy street. It’s the person in the left hand lane of the highway (usually driving the Anti-Christ of the road: the mini-van) who won’t move over to let you pass and then speeds up when you do try to pass. It’s that person at work that is always negative. The person who is always complaining and just waiting to gossip or cause a problem. The 2%er is the one who always seems to put thumbs down to new thinking and innovative ideas. This is the person in the company who everyone seems to dislike, but are afraid to challenge because of the perceived (and it is only perceived) power.

I used to get really upset with these people, even to the point of verbal abuse. Then I realized that most of these people didn’t even know that they did anything wrong. They are so caught up in their own negative, narrow minded world, they see their way as the only way, and anything that differs from their view is just plain wrong. Well, I figured out that these people have a disease, and that disease is called anal-cranial inversion. The problem is that we gear our entire lives trying to appease these individuals.

I asked a police officer to tell me what percentage of the public would still pick up a gun and shoot you no matter what the law is and he said it would be about 2% of the population. I call these diseased people with anal-cranial inversion, my two-percent society.

We have 100 km per hour speed limits on the highways because 2% can’t drive. We go through theft detectors in stores because 2% steal. Many of us wear certain clothes and act a certain way because we are afraid of what the 2% will say to us. Most of our actions, our company policies, our laws, our worries and our stresses are based on the actions of the 2%.

A few years ago you may remember a 2%er drove his vehicle through the front doors of the parliament buildings in Ottawa. Parking in front of parliament became an issue simply because of one wacko 2%er.

Not only do we over react to the 2% of the population; we over react to the 2% of the incidents that happen around us. Again, parliament shows us the way. One incident with the Canadian flag and we ban all Canadian flags in parliament. Why not just take control and if flag waving gets out of hand put a stop to the incident, not the flags. We hamstring the current and future generations simply because we will not deal directly with the 2%.

A small town in the Niagara Peninsula wanted to invoke a curfew for teenagers simply because some of them are causing a problem. Again the majority suffer because of the few. Impose a strong consequence on those who would cause a problem, but do not punish the innocent simply because you do not want to deal harshly, or directly, with the guilty.

Most of us just go about our business, not wanting to harm anyone and not wanting to be harmed. We would not knowingly, harm the planet or anyone on it. The 2% will go out of their way to harm others. Most of us just want to be loved and validated as good people. The 2% get their validation (and sometimes what they think is love) by using power, bullying, fear and exaggerated untruths to force the sane people to recognize their (the 2%) existence.

Many people stay hidden in a closet of their own creation because of the 2%. We hesitate to pick up a hitchhiker because we might get mugged. We are afraid to hug and touch because it may be seen as inappropriate or illegal. Some schools have no touch policies because of the possibility that a 2%er will go too far. Appropriate hugging is not a bad thing, humans need to touch and be touched. The 2% will touch inappropriately no matter what the rules are, just deal with the 2% and deal with them directly and harshly. Let’s not stop hugging, touching and loving simply because of the 2%.

I will not let the 2% govern my life, and nor should you. Live the life you were meant to live. Be the person you were meant to be. Ralph Waldo Emmerson said, “Alas are the people who can sing and die with the song still in them.” You all have a song to sing and as long as that song does not harm the planet or anyone on it, do not let the 2% stop you from singing your song. Come out of your self-made closet and show the world that you really are a helping, hugging, loving and caring person. It is time to let the 2% know that they cannot rule your workspace, your personal space or your spiritual space.

Today if a2%er gets in my face, I smile and say to myself, ‘things could be worse, I could be them’. Next month I will give you a simple formula on how to deal with the 2%.”
