BE AT PEACE
I was at our local shopping centre when I ran into an old friend who had not seen me in over 15 years. We chatted for some time and caught up on where our lives have taken us. She said something to me that really resonated; something that I now think about daily.
She said, “Ted, you look like you are finally at peace.”
I sat for a moment and thought about that statement and after some reflection; I realized that she was absolutely correct. I am at peace.
I have let go. I came to the realization that we will always get what we need. It may not be what we want or what we think we need at the time, but we do get what we need and the signs are all around us. We just need to see the signs and act.
Being at peace means there is no conflict. Being at peace means there is no anger. Being at peace means that there is nothing wrong. Being at peace means exactly what it says. Being at peace means we must forgive and let go.
I have learned that if we concentrate on the good and honorable ways or being, then we can attain peace. I celebrate the fact that when I need it, generally I get a parking spot in the front of the building that I am going into. This sounds like a small thing, but if we celebrate the good things that happen to us hundreds of times a day, we will stop fretting about the bad things that happen to us infrequently during that same day. Too many of us linger over the 2% of bad and not the 98% of good.
It really does not matter what happens to me that counts. It is how I react to the situation that is important. Being at peace is about being balanced and centered as well. When I balance the mind, body and spirit, all is well. When I take care of the spiritual side of life, then my mind is at peace and when my mind is at peace, my body is healthy.
When I realized that the 2%ers who adversely affect me did not know what they did to me, I came to understand that it is not about me; it is about them. I was able to let go and actually forgive them. To quote some famous words, “Forgive them, for they know not what they do.”
Let go of the anger. Let go of the grudges. Let go of the conflict. Let go of the need to complain about everything. And, let go of the fear. When you fully let go, you will be totally at peace.
May peace be with you.
Ted
DID YOU KNOW?
By Pierre R. Ouellette Hon.B.A., LL.B.
A recent article in the Toronto Star discussed a problem that Ted and I have been addressing in our '3Rs of Psychological Harassment in the Workplace' seminars and that is the lack of appreciation on the part of employers of the risk they face with respect to bullying at work. The article echoed our view that the status of the Law in Ontario is clearly covered by case law and that this case law unequivocally affirms that employers are obligated to protect their employees against this type of bullying. Did you know that pending Federal legislation would make supervisors and managers personally liable for financial awards given to victims of psychological harassment on the job?
