Volume 4, Issue 6, June 2005 BE PATIENT In the last two editions of the Caravan I talked about being at peace and how to smile on the inside. This month I want to talk about patience. I see too many people wanting things to go faster. It seems that because we are now in the world of high technology that we expect our lives to go as fast as our computers. I watch people in line at the grocery store, at the bank and in Traffic. Their faces are tight. They look impatient and very stressed. Some even make comments to others in the line about how they are in a hurry and how upset they are with the slow service. Everyday we are in a rush to get from one place to another. We drive our cars instead of walking. We go to fast food restaurants and gulp our lunches. We microwave our frozen dinners and eat in front of the TV. We do crash workouts with crash diets and we rarely stop to look at life. There is an old saying, “We always get what we need, but it may not necessarily be what we want.” I used to be like everyone else, run, run, run. Now, I let go and let the universe lead me. I take things as they come and I know that I will get what I need. That does not mean that I sit in a corner waiting for things to happen. I create my day and I am proactive instead of re-active. I do my best to plan ahead and anticipate all that could disrupt my plan and my goal. What I have done is learned to slow down and enjoy the journey. There was an old bull and a young bull standing on top of a hill eyeing a heard of heifers in the valley below. The young bull says to the old bull, “Let’s run down there and make love to one of those cows.” The old bull, says, “Son, let’s walk down and make love to all of them.” By being patient we can accomplish much more with less stress. By being patient we do not make as many mistakes because we are more careful with our actions. By being patient we are able to enjoy the wonders of this journey rather than concentrate on the finish line. In Ted’s world everything is clearer. Patience has allowed me to gain more of what I need, because I am not missing the details by running past the essentials. Patience has allowed my stress level to drop dramatically. I walk more and I walk at a slower pace than before. When I am waiting for someone I always have a book and a pad of paper with me so that I can either read or write while I am waiting. Patience has given me the wisdom to allow others to work at their level and at their pace. People arrive at things at many different speeds, with many different conclusions, none of which are necessarily wrong. I can now allow others to go at their rate of speed and not push my concepts onto them. When was the last time you just let go and let it happen? When was the last time that you just sat on the front porch and watched the world go by? When was the last time you walked to the corner store instead of driving? When was the last time that you had a family dinner cooked from scratch and ate it slowly with a good wine, some nice music and family and friends around to enjoy it with? Don’t just try to get a fast piece of life today…slow down and with patience, you can enjoy all this life has to offer, today, tomorrow and into the future. Peace… Ted DID YOU KNOW? By Pierre R. Ouellette Hon.B.A., LL.B. I spoke to a usually well-informed friend the other day and he was talking about 'the law' and 'the fact' that he and his friend were 'officially living common law' because they had 'been together for over a year'. The fact that it was all nonsense truly shocked him! Even assuming that Ontario's Family Law legislation applied to gay couples - by no means a given - there is simply no such thing as a 'one year rule' in Ontario. Couples seeking some form of certainty can nonetheless do something about it. Did you know that gay and lesbian couples can decide things on their own by entering into a legally binding 'co-habitation agreement'? This is a service which The Mouradian Group now provides along with the preparation of Powers of Attorney for Personal Care. (So your partner does not get shut out by your next-of-kin in making medical decisions on your behalf!)
