OOHS AND YAH BUTS
We humans are interesting creatures. We are OOHS and YAH BUTS.
When we see something different, we get this strange look on our faces and we say OOH! Sometimes that OOH is not loud, but it certainly is there. My theory is simple, if a tattooed person sporting multicoloured, multi length hair and a nose piercing is sitting next to you in a restaurant, as long as their nose is not in your soup, it is none of your business. Yet, we get that look and we say OOH!
We need to celebrate difference, not be afraid of it or be repulsed by it. Many aspects of our world have changed and in my opinion, changed for the better. We now see more difference in our cities for example. We see people with different abilities, different sexualities, different colours, different sizes, different temperaments and different opinions. Celebrating our rite to be different is what makes all of us unique. Different is not bad.
Did you know in some parts of Australia you can get spaghetti on toast for breakfast? Those of you who just made the OOH sound keep in mind that some of our OOHS may be someone else’s AHH!!!
We are also YAH BUTS and many of us YAH BUT just about everything.
I like your hair….YAH BUT it’s not the way I want it.
I like your sweater…YAH BUT it’s not the one I wanted to wear today.
You should try that new soap…YAH BUT didn’t they say…
We should stop at the store on our way home…YAH BUT then we’ll have to…
The sun is shining…YAH BUT they say it is going to rain tomorrow.
We even YAH BUT when we apologize. Have you ever heard this type of apology?
I’m really sorry for yelling at you…BUT…if you hadn’t done….
From now on do your best not to take a positive statement and add the negative twist to it. The more you can stay in the positive, the more great things will happen in your life. Too many of us concentrate on the 2% bad and not on the 98% good.
Instead of YAH BUT, how about THANK YOU, or YES IT IS ISN’T IT, or THAT WOULD BE FUN, or WOW, YOU NOTICED, THANKS.
Life is so much better when we are not always OOHING AND YAH BUTTING.
Take care of yourself.

MOM’S TWO CENTS
By Jordin Williamson
YAH BUT…
Mommy, look at the pretty picture I made you.
Yah but…look at the mess you made.
Hey Dad, I got 2 goals tonight at hockey.
Yah but…I hear you let the other team score 4.
Mommy, I made you breakfast.
Yah but…you know I only drink coffee in the morning.
Dad, did you see that I shovelled the sidewalk for you?
Yah but…you buried the garbage can in snow.
I don’t know about you, but I feel pretty bad just reading this. Imagine the child having it said to them on a regular basis. Talk about a let down. Think about how you would feel if every effort that you made was followed with YAH BUT…
Be aware of the things that you say to your kids because they soak it all up. All our children want is to be validated. They want to know that they are loved and that their opinions mean something to you. See them for the wonderful little people that they are. Be positive. Be supportive. Give respect and praise to your children and you will receive it in return.
